MURALS & TROMPE L’OEILS
TROMPE L’OEIL(“deceive the eye” in french) is an art technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions.
Originates in the Baroque period, when it refers to perspectival illusionism, trompe l’oeil dates much further back. It was (and is) often employed in Murals. Instances from Greek and Roman times are known, for instance in Pompei. A typical trompe l’oeil mural might depict a window, door, or hallway, intended to suggest a larger room.
A MURAL is any piece of artwork painted or applied directly on a wall, ceiling or other permanent surface. A distinguishing characteristic of mural painting is that the architectural elements of the given space are harmoniously incorporated into the picture.
VERRÉ EGLOMISES
This highly skilled technique is called Verré Eglomise, meaning gilded glass. This type of artwork dates back to the Roman period, yet became popular in France in the 18th century, the name derives from the French Decorator and art dealer Jean-Baptise Glomy.
These technique involves painting on reverse on a tempered glass using genuine silver leaf to create the mirror effect.
You can see some of Mariana’s Verré Eglomises at the Conrad Algarve Hotel in the Lago Lounge.
PAINT EFFETCS
Paint effects or faux painting are terms used to describe decorative paint finishes that replicate the appearance of materials such as marble, wood or stone. The term comes from the French word faux, meaning false, as these techniques started as a form of replicating materials such as marble and wood with paint, but has subsequently come to encompass many other decorative finishes for walls and furniture including simulating recognisable textures and surfaces.
GILDING WORKS
Gilding is a decorative technique that involves applying a very thin coating of gold , silver , bronze, etc to solid surfaces.
Egyptian tomb paintings and reliefs from the 23rd century BCE are the first known examples depicting gold being beaten into leaf.
A gilded object is also described as “gilt”.
To the gilded object can be apply a variety of antique and distress effects.
